Thanksgiving 2010

We got home this afternoon from our Thanksgiving trip to Hartfield. It's a family tradition that we go there each year, but we were especially excited this year to meet up since it had been awhile since we had seen the Williams family. We know we have many things to be thankful for, but certainly near the top of the list is being thankful for family and the great times we have to enjoy together. Sister Update

It's hard to believe how quickly the fall is passing. With Thanksgiving next week, it almost signals the end of fall and start of winter. The girls have been having a good fall so far. It's been an adjustment for all of us to have such shorter day light time and not as much time to play outside. We used to love spending the afternoons and late evenings after dinner playing outside, but that's not the case so much now, so we're trying to expend as much energy indoors as we can when necessary.
Nina has still been enjoying preschool and enjoying the social scene it provides. When we're at home, she loves to dance, draw or color, and imagine play. She also still loves running and being active. Mark has been teaching her how to play tennis by using training balls and the wall in our basement. She's doing quite well. I also took her over to the indoor pool this past week to get a little pool time. She made such huge progress with swimming at the middle to end of the summer, I didn't want to see her forget it all. She picked up right where she left off for the most part, so that was encouraging.
Lyla is still the little comic of the house. She's starting to be much more of "herself" when we're around others, and she's not nearly as shy as she used to be. She adores her sister still, and anything Nina does, Lyla still wants to do too. She's still a predominant lefty, so I'm sure now that it will stick. She loves to ride her scooter outside, and when we're inside, she likes to play with all of Nina's little princess dolls. She loves being "nakey friends" with her sister. She and Nina run around in their underwear before bed time, and it's one of Lyla's favorite things to do. She runs, squeels, laughs, and has so much fun. When nakey time is over, there are generally tears and toddler attitude. She also sleeps with a zillion "sleeping friends" and if she wakes up in the middle of the night and can't find one, a scream startles us awake, and one of us goes running in there only to find that she can't locate a stuffed animal in her bed.
Both girls have days when we feel like they're growing up way too fast. Other days feel like we'll be stuck in toddler world forever, but we're very thankful for both of them and they joy they bring us. Also, both girls LOVE wrestle time with Mark. They've always both loved rough playing with him, and he loves it too!

Preschool Thanksgiving Celebration

Here is Watchful Owl (Nina's Indian name) after her preschool Thanksgiving celebration yesterday. They made pretty necklaces, head dresses, a smock, and some other cute Thanksgiving crafts. The fall has really flown by, but we are looking forward to spending Thanksgiving week at Hartfield with the family.

Poppy's Birthday

This week was my dad's birthday, so we met over at my parents' house for dinner to celebrate. Poppy started off on rough terms with the girls when he pulled a little incident with a stink bug. He found one crawling on the wall, and while he was walking behind me with the stink bug in his hand, he pretended to put it down the back of my shirt. I, of course, started screaming, which made the girls very upset. We were all laughing, but Nina and Lyla were so upset that Poppy did something to make me scream. After soothing everything over and promising not to tease me with stink bugs, the girls warmed back up to Poppy. Lyla wanted to wear his glasses...
...and get in some quality time with Uncle Bo.They looked at some of their old pictures on the computer with Mousey...
...then we called it a night. Happy Birthday, Poppy!

Past the Peak

Just after Halloween, I had the opportunity to go to Skyline Drive for the first time. I was very excited because I thought it would be a great time to see the trees at the peak of their fall color change. I found out when I got there that the trees at the high elevation of Skyline had already passed their peak, and the leaf colors were really quite dull (as you can see below). So, instead of taking pictures of trees with beautiful leaves, I ended up liking some interesting trees with no leaves at all. Funny how that works...

First Haircut

This week, I gave Lyla her first haircut. Her hair was getting so long in the back, and we liked it, but the front was so much shorter than the back. So I decided to give her a cut to even it up more, and hopefully now when it grows out, it will grow out a little more even. Nina got a couple inches cut off also. She actually asked me to cut it short - I think it has to do with not liking getting her tangles brushed out. I have a little story I tell her about the tangle family who comes and parties in her hair while she sleeps, and that's why she wakes up with tangles in her hair (because they're doing so much partying in there). Anyway, every day since I've cut her hair, she hasn't had tangles and seems pretty convinced that the tangle family can't party very well in shorter hair!

Veggie Tales Concert

Today was a busy, but fun, day. Nina had a game this morning, followed by a team lunch at Foster's Grille. The season is over next week, so all the kids got a participation trophy today. Nina was proud. We made a pit stop at home to get Lyla a nap, change clothes, etc. then we were off to the Veggie Tales concert tonight.
Things were a little rough when we got there. We had ordered our tickets months ago and had paid the extra to be in the "gold circle" seats so we'd be up close to the stage. Anyway, when we tried to find our seats, they were closed off with a sign that just said "See the reseating table." Not good. Long story short, the stage size had to be changed to accomodate the large veggie costumes, our section of seats was then no longer available for seating, and they had nowhere else for us to sit except for the seats in the way back (they did refund the ticket price difference, but that was a lame consolation). We ended up heading to the balcony where we could see well, and the girls enjoyed watching the show from there. The concert was a lot of fun with tons of kids singing, clapping, and dancing along to their favorite songs. The girls seemed to really enjoy the concert too!
Nina wasn't feeling too photogenic tonight, so she didn't want to be in the picture when Mark took one of me and Lyla. I was told when we came in that I really wasn't supposed to take pictures during the show, but since we got a bum deal with our seats and ended up in the balcony, I figured I'd take the pictures anyway. :)

Baltimore Aquarium

Today we went up to Baltimore for a visit to the aquarium. It's been two years since our last visit, but Nina has been asking to go to the aquarium again for months. Since Mark has had this week off, we've been trying to do some fun things as a family, and this was definitely one activity that was on the list. We saw the dolphin show again, saw a very fun 4-D Diego and Dora show, and then we spent the rest our time checking out all the exhibits. We saw some really neat sea creatures and some new things that have been added since our last visit. You can click on the collage below to see pictures of our day.P.S. Those of you who have followed our blog for awhile might recognize one of these pictures. We had Nina try to find the place on the fish eye wall where she posed when she was two. She found it and posed again - so funny that it's the exact same pose. We didn't tell her to stand like that. You can click on the hyperlink in the above text to see the picture from when she was two.

Mark's Finest Moment

Aside from this day four years ago, and this memorable evening, this morning might have been one of Mark's finest moments (as it pertains to a guy chalking up some major man points). So, here's the story. We like Costco's brand of organic peanut butter. It doesn't come already mixed, so you need to mix the top layer of oil with the rest of the jar of peanut butter. This may sound like I'm exaggerating, but it's a major ordeal (and nearly impossible) to get the oil all the way down to the very bottom middle part of the jar. It just doesn't work. We eat a lot of peanut butter in our house, so this just isn't a once every couple of months type of problem. The last times I've mixed it, and I used a lot of effort, made a big mess, and it still didn't get all mixed in the bottom. Anyway, when Mark got his drill out this morning, I had to get the camera. I thought we were going to have a serious situation on our hands, and for future reference, I was going to have it documented with pictures.
I must speak truthfully and admit his plan worked perfectly (even though I was completely convinced he was crazy). He used some attachment on his drill, stuck it down into the peanut butter jar, and before we knew it, perfectly smooth peanut butter.
Mission accomplished!

Halloween Malfunction

Thankfully the malfunction wasn't a wardrobe malfunction, but it was a heavy hitter for me. It was a camera malfunction. Just as we had finished getting the girls ready in their costumes (as Brittany and Eleanor of the Chipettes), I got out my camera to take pictures of them, and experienced my first serious camera malfunction. While I realize this is not an earth shattering problem, for a person who logs most memories away in the form of pictures, this was a disappointing night to miss. There was no time to try to fix a problem then, our friends were waiting for us with their kids, the trick-or-treating had officially gotten under way, and the Chipettes were desperate to join the fun. I grabbed my ancient old camera that has been dropped on it's head more times than it should, and got these blah pictures. I tried taking others, but everything else came out blurry (getting dropped on your head too much will do that to a person or camera).
Our little chipettes had a great evening, for the most part. They loved getting compliments on their look, collected mass quantities of candy, and had a ton of fun. Lyla, however, had a rough ending. She started running down the sidewalk to our house (in the dark), tripped, fell, and ended up with two bloody knees. Not fun, but other than that, it was a great evening for both girls, or should I say, chipmunks.
