Summer is Here!

Ok, so it’s not officially summer on the calendar, but it’s summer for every kid in Loudoun County who is now out of school for the year!  We started things off well (actually this happened right before the end of school) with Nina getting a black eye at the hands of her sister.  It wasn’t malicious, but it left a nice bruise that lasted for almost a week.  Lyla was “practicing” a softball pitch while throwing her sticky ball against the door, and didn’t notice that her sister was standing right behind her when she wound her fist back.  Of course, it clocked Nina right in the eye.  It truely was an accident, but it was still all the justification I needed to ban those sticky balls from the house!

We also got to take in Emme’s lacrosse team’s championship game.  Her team won, and we were glad to be there for the big game!

We also finally got Nina over to the hair salon to cut off a few inches of that beautiful hair.  She loves her long hair, but her long hair loves tangles, so it was time to trim it up for summer.  It helps when I can take her to a hair salon for girls that is cute and fun, where lollypops are involved, and they get to hang out in the pink limo after the haircut.
We also have one member of the family who seems very happy that school is out.  I don’t know if Cayenne could ever get enough attention, but she certainly takes advantage of any and all opportunities.

So, I don’t think things seem to be shaping up too strenuously this first few days of summer break.  Other than the schedule of the classes I teach during the week and the girls having one sport practice a week, we try to not plan a whole lot.  We’ll do fun things as the opportunity arrises, plan a few weekends away, and catch up with some friends we don’t get to see as much during the school year, but mostly we’ll spend a lot of time at the pool and enjoy two months of just hanging out!

Last Day of School

Today was the last day of school for Nina and Lyla.  We officially have a 3rd and 5th grader.  That’s scary!  They both have had a wonderful year at school.  They have had great teachers, nice classmates, and they were both actually sad to see the year come to an end.  It felt like just a few months ago we were dropping off their supplies for the first day of school, and here we are already with the school year ending.  It’s all going so quickly!
The past week or so at school has been mostly filled with movies, parties, yearbook signings, etc., and today rounded things out as being quite the party day.  After the last day festivities at school, we met up with our neighbors for our annual last day of school party, then we went from there to an ice cream social for Nina’s whole class.  It was all the ice cream and toppings they could dream of and a last chance to run around and hang with their friends.  They came home exhausted but happy.  Here’s to hopefully a fun summer ahead!

Exhale...

If you’ve ever had your kid struggle with something you just couldn’t give them a solution for, you’ll be right there with me on this post.  It’s a long story, but I’ll try my best to keep it short.  Awhile ago, Nina wanted to do dance with acrobatic moves.  We didn’t really know what it was called or how to get into it, but she saw dancers doing acrobatic moves in a performance and was captivated - it was what she wanted to do.  She has rhythm and can dance, but it was the acrobatic moves that she needed help with.  I can barely cartwheel, and I never took a dance or gymnastics class in my life, so we just did our best to try to figure out where to start.  We thought that getting her some tumbling classes would be a good start, and from there she could learn some of the tricky moves that she could apply to dance.

We enrolled her in a class, and her athleticism shined through.  She did everything well, but once it came time to do a back handspring, she encountered a roadblock.  Without the safety net of a spotter, she couldn’t bring herself to do it.  We thought she was getting to the point of doing it on her own last spring, so we tried a different class, all looked super positive, then she broke her ankle in June (in a non-tumbling related accident) and spent the entire summer in a cast.  She wanted to get back into tumbling by the fall, and since we were told by her orthopedic that it was ok, we let her start again.  She worked back to the point she was at before the broken ankle but again battled the mental issue of the back handspring.  She had all the tools physically, but she lacked the confidence to do it without a spotter standing nearby (even if the spotter never helped her or touched her while she did the handspring).

Several weeks ago, she finally did her roundoff back handspring without a spotter.  She was beyond excited, her coach was thrilled, and we were so happy for her.  She felt great, felt proud of herself, and we were just happy that she finally conquered this big mental obstacle, and we thought it was all behind her.  Unfortunately it wasn’t.  After doing her roundoff backhandsprings with no spotter for a week, she suddenly had another mental block and was unable to do them. It was almost worse because she had been doing them then just stopped for a reason she couldn’t explain or fix despite the fact that she desperately wanted to do this trick.  We had countless conversations of encouragement, but she felt upset and disappointed, and to make matters worse, this all happened just a few weeks before she was set to try out for a team she wanted to be on.

The few weeks that followed were very frustrating for her.  She just couldn’t win this mental battle seemingly no matter how hard she tried, but to her credit she never gave up.  Even on one particularly hard day when she was in tears and feeling like she was ready to quit, she had a good cry about it, laced up her tumble shoes and went back to working through it.  It didn’t come easy.  Everything to this point HAS come easy to Nina.  She’s a great student, she’s athletic, and she makes friends and gets along with people easily.  And while she had all the physical tools/skills she needed to do her roundoff backhandspring, she couldn’t conquer it mentally.

The try out for the team was Saturday afternoon, and at her last practice opportunity the day before the try out, she did her roundoff backhandsprings without a spotter.  It was a great confidence booster going into the tryout, but based on how things went before, we were very uncertain about what would happen at the try out.  It wouldn’t have been such a big deal if she didn’t care about it so much, but this was something she really wanted and she had worked hard to get to this point.

The only things we really could do for her were encourage her to just do her best and pray for her.  I know that God cares about Nina, and my prayer wasn’t so much about her being able to do a certain tumble move, but my prayer was that she wouldn’t let fear hold her back from doing something in life that she really cared about, and in turn, cause her to live with a feeling or regret.  So, we prayed for her, but my family also prayed for her.  They were in her corner just as much as Mark and I were.  They prayed for her confidence leading up to Saturday, and they also stopped during their busy day on Saturday and took the time to pray for her during her specific tryout time slot (as did we).

She ended up doing fabulously on her tryout.  Parents weren’t even allowed in the building, so I had to sit and wait in the car for about 30 minutes - just wondering how it was going, but when she emerged from the building with a huge smile on her face, I knew God had given her the confidence to do her best.  She did all the moves that the judges asked her to do, and she roundoff back handspringed with confidence!

So, after the tryout we thanked the Lord and headed off to Sweet Frog where she got the biggest ice cream she wanted.  Later that day, Lyla just happened to get invited to sleep over at the house of some good friends of ours, so we had just Nina that evening.  We didn’t know if she made the team she wanted or not at this point, but we went out to celebrate.  Her goal was making a certain team, but that’s not the goal we cared about most.  We wanted to go celebrate her hard work, her perserverance, her trust in the Lord, and the power of prayer - regardless of what team she made.  If she didn’t make the team she wanted, then it wasn’t meant to be, but at least she could walk away with the confidence that she didn’t let fear stop her from going for something she really wanted.

We found out last night that she did make the team she wanted.  She’s thrilled, and we’re happy for her, but more importantly, we were so thankful that the Lord cared enough to reach down and boost a little girl’s confidence at just the right time so she could see the power of prayer, love from family, and the reward of determination and hard work!

Birthday Week

Since Nina’s birthday fell on a Monday, we waited until the weekend to celebrate with friends and family.  Normally we’re at Hartfield for Memorial Day weekend, but everyone had committments here, so we all stayed put this year.  All the cold and rain from the previous two weeks pushed out of here and it was hot and sunny for the weekend.  Friday after school the girls got it started off playing in the water with friends.

Mark had a tournament Saturday and Sunday for the team he coaches, so it was just us girls getting ready to host some of Nina’s friends from school for rollerskating and a sleepover to celebrate her birthday. With exception of two or three other people that were there in short spurts, the girls had the rollerskaing rink completely to themselves (probably due to the holiday weekend and the beautiful weather), so they requested all the songs they wanted, were as loud as they wanted, and skated as long as they could stand it.

After skating, we piled back in the car for probably what was one of the loudest car rides of my life then made it back home just as Mark was arriving with the pizza.

They ate dinner and had cake, Nina requested an emoji cake this year, then we geared up for lots more energy and eventually some sleeping!

After the girls all went home on Sunday, we cleaned up and regrouped a bit, we made it over to the pool for a couple hours.
On Memorial Day, Monday, we rounded out the week of celebrating by meeting up at my parents house to celebrate Ryleigh and Nina’s birthdays.
It’s hammock season again, and time for more rides on the “Popinator” so this time Lyla brought a roll of 50 pennies with her to feed that Popinator.  We all know the Popinator can’t resist pennies!
There was a cookout, a handstand challenge (which G won), a headstand challenge...

…and attempts made at both!

Of course there were presents, cake, and tree climbing.

Finally, they rounded things out by getting the old Barbie Jeep out of the garage.  I think there’s been a slight change since Nina first tried out the Jeep!  :)

All in all, it was a great afternoon with family and a good way to finish off the week of birthday celebrating!

Happy Birthday, Nina!

Ten years ago, she was born just after 8am on a Tuesday, weighing 6lbs, 13oz, now look at her!  She loves to talk, she’s fun, athletic, kind, and smart, and it’s hard to believe she’s in double digits!
She started off her birthday with a donut breakfat (of course) then had to get serious quickly because she had a big Virginia Standards of Learning test at school today.  I met her after testing and brought her lunch, the sun came out finally, and she didn’t have any homework, so with exception of testing, all was going quite well for her birthday.  We’ll celebrate again this weekend with friends and family, but we had our family celebration tonight.  As usual, the birthday kid gets to pick the dinner she wants, and Nina’s choice was mac ’n cheese, watermelon, chocolate milk, and chocolate cake for dessert.  When it’s your birthday, even meals like that are accpetable, so that’s what we did.

Then as quickly as the day came, it was done.  Time is just flying.  It’s hard to believe we’ve been parents for ten years.  We don’t always get it right, but this girl is a pretty terrific young lady.  I pray that the Lord continues to bless her and guide her through her life - helping her through the trials and keeping her grounded in success.  We love her immensely and wish her the very happiest of 10th birthdays!

Last Game

This past Friday was Lyla’s last practice of the spring season.  She’s had a great couple months playing, but I have to say that I think we’re all going to be glad to have a break from Friday night practices and early Saturday morning games.  On Friday’s last practice, they had their “commencement” to bring things to a close.
The girls offiicially finished the season with their last game on Saturday morning.  As it has been for all but one game this season, it was raining and cold.  This particular morning, it was 8am, 53 degrees, and raining pretty hard at points, but Uncle Bo (who had told Lyla he was coming to her game), still showed up anyway.  He’s a good uncle!  We stopped off for donuts after the game, then Lyla got some rest that afternoon and had to head back (still in the rain) later that day for her last tryout.
The tryouts were for placement on a travel team in the fall.  There were a series of three tryouts on consecutive Saturday afternoons or evenings, so the past three Saturdays have been pretty tiring for Lyla.  After she got home from this tryout which was cold and rainy, she got a hot dinner, a shower, and this is how we found her - completely out on her bed.  The poor thing was just wiped out.  With all that done, she can sleep in and relax on Saturdays for awhile!
