Back to School

While Mark was in Ohio, the girls and I continued the last of summer break and got ready for the start of school.  On Friday morning, we walked over to the school with friends on the street and the girls got to meet their teachers, see their classroom, find out who is in their class, and drop off supplies.  It’s a fast and furious hour with lots going on, lots of energy, and tons of people.  Everyone left feeling pretty excited about the year to come.  Pictures below are the 5th grade girls on our street (minus the fact that Lyla is a 3rd grader).  It was hard for us moms to believe that this was the last time they’d be going to “Meet the Teacher” morning at Legacy Elementary.  It has been such a great school for the girls.  It will be hard to see these girls head off to middle school!

After we got home from the Meet the Teacher event, I loaded the bikes on the bike rack, and we joined up with some friends to head back down the W&OD trail - this time riding towards Leesburg to have lunch at Fireworks Pizza.  We all had a great time biking to the restaurant, we ate outside and refueled with pizza and lemonade for the way back, then biked back to the cars.  Nina and Lyla rounded out the evening by having friends sleep over.  At least one person was wiped after all the activity - me!

The next day we met up with the cousins for the last summer get together at Mousey and Poppy’s.  The girls played outside and we all went to the new Haymarket Chick Fil-A for dinner and ice cream.

I’m never one to shop for school supplies early, and I dread the process every year.  We head to Target or Walmart with our large list of supplies, root through the bins, and hope for the best.  EVERY YEAR the one item that always eludes me are the poly pocket folders in the appropriate color.  There will be a zillion paper folders or poly folders in colors like pink, purple, or black, but every single year, I spend so much time looking for red, blue, green, and yellow folders.  This year was no different.  After trying both Walmart and Target and striking out, we tried Office Depot and found our folders.  You may be thinking “why is this blog worthy?” but if you only knew the drama we go through finding these very year, and to find them the day before school starts (when all the other slacker parents are desperately shopping for supplies) was like hitting the jack pot.  We were a wee bit excited!

We picked Mark up from the airport on Sunday afternoon, and the girls spent their last night of summer running laps around the block and finishing in the mist from the hose.  It was sad to see the summer come to an end.  It always goes so fast, and we enjoy the time together, the relaxed schedule, and the chance to do some fun things that we normally don’t get to do during the school year.  Plus, it was definitely a little scary thinking that we had a 3rd grader and a 5th grader heading off to school the next day!
The morning of the first day of school arrived quickly when the alarms went off at 6:35am.  Nina was “nervicited” (her word for nervous and excited) with typical first day jitters.  This was Nina in her first week of Kindergarten...
…this is Nina on her first day of 5th grade.  She’s a smart, fun, lovely, and friendly girl.  I can’t believe this is her last year of elementary school!

Lyla was a little sad to head off to school on Monday morning.  It’s tough to head back to reality after having fun over the summer, but she came home after her first day with a smile and good things to say about her teacher, so we’re also hoping 3rd grade will be a wonderful year for her!!

Off to the bus on their first day!!
Cayenne’s opinion was evidentaly that it was exhausting getting everyone off to school on the first day!  Rough life this one...
